Sakrete Bathroom Remodeling: The Orlando Owner’s Guide
A full Sakrete bathroom remodel in Orlando runs $9,000 – $28,000 installed, and most jobs take three to five weeks depending on whether you’re tearing out a tub or rebuilding a shower pan from the slab up. When a homeowner calls us about Sakrete bathroom work, it’s usually one of two things: they bought a foreclosure or older home in College Park or Winter Park where the original bathroom was floated with Sakrete products and the pan or curb has finally given out, or they tried a weekend repair and the existing Sakrete mud bed under the tile is now cracked because the substrate shifted. Either way, the product itself rarely fails on its own. What fails is what was done with it, and what Orlando’s humidity and shifting clay soil do to it over a decade or two.
Which Sakrete Models This Applies To
When we talk about Sakrete in a bathroom, we’re not talking about a line of fixtures. Sakrete makes cement-based products: floor mud, sand mix, concrete patch, and the mortar blends used to build shower pans and set tile. The most common Sakrete product we see in Orlando bathrooms is the Sand Mix Topping and Bedding Mix, which is what a lot of builders used years ago to float shower floors and bathroom slabs before waterproof membranes became standard practice in Florida remodels. We also run into Sakrete’s Fast Setting Concrete Patch where someone tried to fill a crack around a drain or a toilet flange and it didn’t bond. The compatibility question isn’t about a model number. It’s about what’s underneath the Sakrete: if the original bed was poured over a PVC or copper pan, or if it was installed before Florida’s current plumbing code required a waterproofing layer, the repair path changes. We stock Sakrete Sand Mix, Sakrete Mortar Mix, and Sakrete Fast Setting Concrete Patch on the truck, and we bring the matching latex admix that Florida’s humidity demands for a bond that won’t crumble. Quality aftermarket equivalents exist, but for shower pans we use Sakrete or equivalent spec mix, never a generic bag that doesn’t state its compressive strength.

Signs Your Sakrete Bathroom Remodeling Is Failing
- Grout lines cracking along the shower floor. This usually means the Sakrete mud bed beneath the tile is losing its bond or was mixed too dry originally. Water gets in, the bed swells, and the tile starts moving. We see this constantly in older Orlando homes where the original install skipped a membrane.
- Tile feels soft or hollow when you tap it. A properly floated Sakrete bed sounds solid. A hollow sound means the mortar has separated from the substrate, and the tile is now floating. Left alone, it cracks, then the floor leaks into the ceiling below.
- A musty smell that won’t leave no matter how much you clean. In Orlando’s humidity, a failing shower pan doesn’t just leak. It feeds mold behind the tile. If the smell comes back a week after scrubbing, the problem is behind the wall, not on it.
- The shower floor slopes toward the door instead of the drain. Original Sakrete beds were hand-floated, and not every installer got the pitch right. You’ll see puddling in the corners, and over time that standing water eats through the grout and into the bed.
- Cracks around the toilet flange or bathroom floor. This signals the concrete or mud bed under the tile has shifted, common in Orlando’s clay-heavy soil that expands and contracts with the rainy season. A cracked Sakrete bed doesn’t heal itself, and any repair that doesn’t address the substrate is temporary.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

An Orlando Sakrete bathroom remodel falls between $9,000 and $28,000, and the spread depends on scope. A small bathroom re-float and re-tile can start around $9,000. A full gut with a new waterproof shower pan, new tile, new vanity, and moving plumbing lines can reach $28,000. Here’s what moves the number:
- Demo and haul-off of the old Sakrete bed, tile, and any water-damaged subfloor: typically $1,500 – $4,000 depending on bathroom size and access.
- New waterproofing and re-float with Sakrete or equivalent spec mix plus membrane (Schluter Kerdi or comparable): $2,000 – $5,500.
- Tile and setting materials including thinset, grout, and edge trim: $1,800 – $5,000 depending on tile choice.
- Fixtures and finishes (vanity, shower valve, drain, glass): $2,500 – $9,000 depending on whether you pick builder-grade or Kohler/Grohe lines we carry.
- Permits and inspections for any plumbing changes: $500 – $1,500, pulled and passed by our office.
You get a written price before we start, and that number doesn’t change unless you change the scope. Every re-float and re-tile carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not done right, we make it right, in writing, before the first bag of Sakrete is opened.
DIY or Call Us?
A homeowner can safely remove a failing vanity, pull up loose floor tile, and check whether the subfloor feels solid under the existing Sakrete bed. What you should not do is try to re-float a shower pan or rebuild a mud bed without knowing how to pitch it correctly. A shower pan that doesn’t slope to the drain is a leak waiting to happen, and in Orlando, that leak becomes mold inside a season. There’s also a real risk when you mix Sakrete in Florida’s humidity: too much water and the bed never reaches strength; too little and it won’t bond. We pull permits, pass inspections, and stand behind the work for a year. If your Sakrete bed is compromised, call (850) 809-0306 and we’ll tell you honestly whether it’s a repair or a re-do before anyone picks up a hammer.
FAQs

A properly installed Sakrete shower pan in Orlando typically lasts 15 – 20 years before the tile and grout need attention, but that assumes a waterproof membrane was installed and the original pitch was correct. Without a membrane, or with a poorly pitched bed, failure often shows up in five to eight years due to Florida’s heat and humidity cycles.
If the crack is hairline and the tile isn’t moving, a repair is sometimes possible with the right admix and patching compound. If the bed has separated from the substrate or the tile is loose, a patch will fail again, and the only honest fix is a re-float. Call (850) 809-0306 for an exact assessment, and we’ll tell you which situation you have.
Most Sakrete bathroom re-floats and remodels take three to five weeks from demo to final inspection. A small bathroom with no plumbing changes can finish in two to three weeks. Permits add time depending on city review, but we handle all of that.
